Stockwell Farm.

Stockwell Farm is a speculative rural masterplan developed as part of Gideon Malherbe's Masters research at the University of Cape Town in 2017. The project is set on a disused portion of a working farm near the Langeberg, between the Western Cape Winelands and the Klein Karoo.

The research began with mapping: of topography, water, access, productive land, family history and the informal building practices already present on the farm. Rather than treating the site as empty land, the project reads it as a place already marked by use, memory and necessity.

The proposal establishes Klein Stockwell as a new rural artefact. A road, earthworks, dams and a sequence of werwe are used to structure the land, moving from a public edge with a filling station, truck stop and restaurant, through a productive agricultural werf, to more secluded guest and retreat spaces.

The work draws from the contemporary rural vernacular of Stockwell: practical, improvised and often shaped by the logic of available material. Precast concrete elements, steel, timber and stone are used as part of an evolving construction language, allowing the proposed buildings to feel connected without relying on historic Cape imagery.

Stockwell Farm is a study in how place can be founded through careful marking. It explores the relationship between land, infrastructure and occupation, and asks how a new rural landscape might grow over time from the practical acts of road-making, building, cultivating and inhabiting.
