The Clubhouse.
PUBLIC BUILDING · RONDEBOSCH, CAPE TOWN · 2022
The Clubhouse is a substantial renovation and upgrade to the communal facilities of a retirement village in Rondebosch, Cape Town, completed in 2022. The project reworked an existing building within an occupied village, requiring the construction process to be carefully coordinated around the daily life of its residents.
The work was shaped by the particular character of the place: an established residential community where shared spaces play an important role. The renewed clubhouse provides a generous communal centre for dining, gathering, recreation and informal encounters, supporting both organised activities and quieter moments of connection.
Behind the calmness of the completed building was a complex construction process. The project involved substantial structural and mechanical coordination, with a new indoor pool forming part of the work. Its success lies in making those technical demands recede, allowing the clubhouse to feel settled, comfortable and easy to inhabit.
Design development and construction oversight were undertaken by Ceoné Joubert as project architect while employed by Gordon Hart Architects. Interior design and furniture by Metapahor Design.

Rooms for gathering, dining and quiet conversation give the clubhouse its renewed purpose — a shared centre where daily life can unfold with ease.
